Abstract
Aims: To accomplish a comparative research of the different epidemiological facts surrounding the birth of children born in our Hospital from immigrant mothers, and check the differences with the spanish ones. Material and methods: 4,951 children born between 1-1-1999 and 31-12-2000 were studied. The statistics compare these children with the Spanish ones. Results: 31.4% of children born in our Hospital are from inmigrant mothers with different nationalities: southamerican (progressively increasing), african, european and oriental. Couples from this last community appear to be the most stable ones, and have the highest rate of afiliation to National Health Service. Once in Spain, african mothers are the ones that later give birth, whereas southamerican ones do it in the shortest period of time. The average of caesarea among european and orientals is remarkably low. There were no multiple births among this last group. From an anthropometric point of view, african children are the heaviest at birth, and the orientals have the smallest head circumference. European mothers have more deafness precedents while Africans' have the highest rate of pathologic auditive screening. Conclusion: One third of births that take place in the Hospital Clinico San Carlos, have an inmigrant origin, among which, southamerican population is growing rapidly. Groups from different origin have different level of compromise with concepts such as period of residence in our country, stability of the couple, afiliation to National Health Service, and also kind of birth and anthropometry of the newborn.
