Abstract

The investigations of the Italian Fascist police forces OVRA and Italian Ministers into Sigmund Freud and the Vienna Society of Psychoanalysis take the form of a twenty-seven page dossier that was built up over four years. The information gathered by the police services and Ministers is false and totally absurd in what it alleges, but was nonetheless of use to the functioning of fascist ideology. Why did Edoardo Weiss and Emilio Servadio submit their request to the totalitarian regime ? When the conditions necessary for the survival of free thought have been annihilated, then the free-thinker is faced with a dilemma. Freud, at the age of 82, chose freedom.
