Abstract

The article examines the communal reception of refugees using examples from the rural areas of Saxony and Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The analysis is based on approaches from sociology of knowledge, focusing on collective patterns of orientation and argumentation. As a central hypothesis, the article assumes that there is a connection between attitudes towards strangers and local practices concerning the reception, accommodation and integration of refugees. The results confirm the hypotheses and, by creating a typology, point to differentiating aspects in the emergence of a local welcoming culture. These are based on structural features and collective experiences of the locality as well as on different approaches towards local governance. © 2017, Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, ein Teil von Springer Nature.
