Abstract

Before traveling with children, parents should be advised to consult the CDC for destination-specific information about health concerns. Primary care physicians can play an important role by encouraging travelers to make sure water and food supplies are safe. Reminders about protection against insect bites and overexposure to the sun are also an important part of pretravel medical care. Both physicians and parents need to allow enough time to complete the vaccination schedule for preventable diseases. When caring for immigrant children, physicians should consult their state health department for specific screening procedures related to the child's country of origin. Each newly arrived child should receive routine well care, including vaccination and mental health services.
