Abstract

Within a very short time, the AfD won several state elections and is now represented in thirteen German state parliaments. According to polls, the AfD with its islam- and immigration-critical positions, could possibly achieve election results in the double-digit range. The following article, therefore, analyzes survey data from December 2015 and June 2016 on socio-demographics and attitudes towards policies and refugees of AfD-related respondents compared to the followers of the established parties. The analysis shows that there are clear differences between (potential) AfD voters and voters of the established parties in their attitudes towards refugees, but also in terms of fears and dissatisfaction with politics. Overall, the AfD seems to be more attractive for people individuals from a lower social background and with lower incomes. © 2017, Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, ein Teil von Springer Nature.
