Abstract

The majority of Turkish fellow citizens who come into psychosomatic rehabilitation are migrants of the first generation, for whom only a few places for treatment with the necessary language and culture-specific competence are available. This clientele is characterized in itssocialisation, amongst other things, by a low level of education, an orthodox religious view of the world and a collective self-image, as well as - in relation to psychotherapy - by external causal and external to external-fatalistic control attribution. These special factors necessitate a modification of our treatment structures. In addition to psycho-educational elements and auto-suggestive procedures, indirect methods of conflict resolution, such as theme centered interactive group psycho-therapyare preferred. The relatives of these patients are included to treatment at an early stage and, because the patients show a low level of abstract thinking, culture specific stories are used as a medium for the subject matter of therapy. As a concept for the predominant short-term group therapy used in rehabilitation, the creation of monocultural treatment units presents itself for Turkish patients, provided that a sufficiently large clientele with comparable sociocultural prerequisites come for treatment.
