Abstract
Immigrants from Latin American countries are now a critical part of the labor force across the United States. The social, economic, and demographic impact of the «Latino/Hispanic» immigrants is remarkable in Tennessee and other Southern states. However, they are represented mostly in the low wage sectors of the economy, particularly in the construction, distribution and retail sectors. The new immigrants are younger and more skilled than those who arrived in previous decades. Also, more women and children join the flow each year, suggesting that they might become permanent settlers. This paper introduces the reader to the subject of «Latino/Hispanic» identity in the United States, provides data on the insertion of recent immigrants in the workforce, and analyzes the economic impact of Latino workers in the booming economy of the city of Memphis, highlighting their contributions through their consumer expenditures and savings, and the payroll/income taxes they paid.
