Abstract
Effective July 1, 2012, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg introduced a novelty regarding the medical care of foreigners living in Hamburg: From that date, statutory health insurance companies are co-responsible for medical care for asylum seekers who are entitled to receive care in case of illness, pregnancy, and childbirth (according to the German social welfare law for asylum seekers, cf. §§ 4 and 6 AsylbLG, Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz). This model is almost unique in Germany; a similar model exists only in Bremen. In our contribution, we analyze the effects of this model. ©2015 by De Gruyter.
