Abstract

The study states about perinatal depression and obstetrical complications in a sample of migrant women with low French proficiency in Geneva. The aims of the study were to follow-up the development of depressive symptomatology from antenatal to postnatal period, to observe obstetrical complications and to identify associated psychosocial risk factors. The sample included 21 pregnant immigrant women, half of them had a precarious legal status (asylum seekers, refugees and undocumented migrants). Depressive symptoms were assessed during the third trimester of pregnancy and three months after birth, using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). We also collected data about obstetrical complications and assessed maternal sensitivity. The rate of antenatal depression was 52%, the rate of postnatal depression was 33%. Almost 20% of participants presented a clinical depression score both during pregnancy and after birth. No association was found between perinatal depression and obstetrical complications. We discuss the relationship between perinatal depression and migration-related psychosocial risk factors in newcomers. © Médecine & Hygiène.
