Abstract

According to two recent meta-analyses, immigrants have a three times higher risk of schizophrenia than the indigenous population. This risk persists into the second generation; it depends upon skin pigmentation, being higher among immigrants with darker skin than among fair-skinned immigrants. Moreover, first-generation immigrants present more often acute episodes of psychosis, while second-generation immigrants present more often typical schizophrenia. This article reviews the French data relevant to this issue. Early studies found a higher proportion of foreigners admitted to psychiatry. Recent data confirm the higher risk of schizophrenia and psychosis among immigrants. French studies do not allow concluding as to the clinical differences between generations.
