Abstract
Descendants grappling with the traumatic aspects of family history and exile often find themselves torn between paradoxical issues of identity (manifested by strange symptoms) without being in possession of the historical signifiers behind them. Based on a case study viewed from a phenomenological and psychoanalytical perspective, the authors reflect on the story of a daughter of Algerian parents, who emigrated to France during the Algerian War. Filigraned into the dark pages of the family history, shattered by the trauma of war and exile, only a "metaphorising object" can bear witness to the ultimate unconscious desire for filial rebinding. © ERES.
