Abstract
Setting aside any psychopathology of the migrant, the author questions, from his perspective as a psychotherapist, what impels this person to leave and to settle in another country, beyond obvious concrete reasons. The author proposes the existence of a psychic reality characterized by the conjunction of unconscious fantasies of a maniac type, associated with the ego ideal. This psychic reality is seen as an essential element in the undertaking of a migratory project and its pursuit over time, provided that what the migratory act has left unresolved can be transformed through elaboration involving a psychic processes related to sublimation and castration. Otherwise, if it remains within the sphere of psychic omnipotence, the same fantasmatic material will become the source of psychic trauma when submitted to the reality principle in the new environment. This can create situations of mental confusion, more or less pronounced, in the migrant as well as in the host social environment.
