Neither guests nor workers - The new immigration from Spain to Germany from a historically comparative perspective [Weder Gäste noch Arbeiter1- Die neue Zuwanderung aus Spanien nach Deutschland aus einer historisch vergleichenden Perspektive] (Review)
Glorius B.*
Abstract
The article focuses on the changing mobility patterns of Spaniards since the onset of the economic crisis which are sometimes referred to as a "new guest workers' movement" in public discourse. The paper pursues the argument that this "new mobility" is the result of an economic and social transformation process that Spain has undergone in recent decades. Democratization, liberalization, educational expansion and the spread of new ways of living have opened up new options in terms of career development, especially for the younger generations. Facing deterioriating economic conditions in times of crisis, more and more Spaniards are opting for (temporary) migration, a possibility that was strongly facilitated by the process of economic globalization and European integration of the recent decades. © 2015 Deutsche akademie fü landeskunde e.V.Leipzig.
