Abstract

The phenomenon of human mobility is very topical and complex, given its direct and indirect correlations with other social phenomena such as development, education, access to health, wars, conflicts, persecutions and many other social and cultural issues that often cause migration or are affected by the consequences of migration. At the centre of these dynamics lie human persons, directly involved in migratory processes with all their personal, socio-cultural, environmental and peculiar variables. Among these persons, irregular forced migrants constitute a particularly vulnerable category, both due to the events that typically cause their departure and due to their legal status. Thus, in this article, we provide a series of reflexions which are also aimed towards action, since they address the implications of the particular social condition of irregular forced migrants on their psychosocial wellbeing, starting with some fundamental psychological concepts such as trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and resilience, as understood in some of the recent psychosocial theories. Even if the variables are many and generalization is always a risk, it is possible to identify some of the impli- cations that migration has on people, deducing from psychology the concepts and theories that are most helpful for interpreting particular situations and for intervention. For this purpose, we show how the exercise of autobiographical narration, together with therapeutic and other accompanying methods, can serve as an initial instrument allowing migrants to overcome trauma and to activate the necessary resources so to face the new challenges posed by the environment where they live. © 2018 Gregorian University Press.
