Abstract

The present research explores the construction of the immigrant woman as portrayed in the discourse of academia by analyzing the utterances o expert voices connected with academia who participated in an International Congress that raised questions on the subject. We analyzed the contents of judgmental discourses over the woman immigrant subject and about the ways in which a collective imagination emerges about the places and cultural frameworks of her origin, about gender relationships and about life conditions of these women in the host society, with the intention of contributing to emphasize the equalizing effects that those discourses may contain. The results obtained reveal a tension between discourses that make visible the process of subordination that immigrant women undergo in the host society, which stem out of the intersectional operation of a diversity of differentiation axes, and those that emphasize their capacity as agents and their resistance to confront these situations.
