Abstract

This article presents representative findings on the participation of immigrant children and adolescents in sports clubs. Thereby, the so-called third generation of immigrants, i.e. the grandchildren of former immigrants, is the focal point. It could be demonstrated that the third generation of immigrants does not differ from the autochthonous German population with respect to participation in sports clubs. In the course of three generations the initial differences in sports club membership have disappeared. Female immigrants of the third generation are also no longer underrepresented in sports clubs. The results are discussed and interpreted against the background of seminal theories of immigrant integration. © 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
