Abstract

In a questionnaire study, 96 international and 171 domestic students of a German university indicated the type of social support they preferred in three prototypical critical situations during their course of study. The participants also reported which persons they preferred to receive social support from in these situations. Both foreign and domestic students favored problem-oriented social support over emotion-oriented support, foreign students even more so than domestic students. This preference for problem-oriented support increased the more problematic a critical situation was considered by the students.
