Abstract

The article aims to identify the determinants of international workforce migration between the European Union's (EU) member countries under the conditions of globalization and the knowledge economy. We present the results of several econometric analyses (linear regression) focused on the determinants of migration within the EU member states and the impact of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in purchasing power parity on migration's flows. We introduce several innovative variables that can be used in econometric analyses of international migration to reflect the shift of economies to the knowledge-based stage. The models, covering both economic and non-economic determinants in accordance with migration theories, indicate that the determinants stemming from the gravity theory of migration were the strongest drivers for the stocks of migration within the EU member countries. The influence and the relevance of an economic determinant, expressed as GDP per capita in purchasing power parity, showed the pulling effect's prevalence over the push effect and the relevance of "soft" factors in migration. In our conclusions, we address why the research of international migration between the countries of international economic integration groupings is a topical issue at present. © 2018 Common Ground Research Networks.
