Abstract
Asylum seekers often have distressing stories to tell, and few speak English. Preparing medico-legal reports necessitates having informed opinions that are expressed succinctly and to a time schedule that is often very tight. Interpreters are essential and there are skills to be acquired in communicating through them indirectly with patients. Remaining detached, without being indifferent, is essential but can be difficult to achieve.
