Abstract

The purposes of the present study were 1) to describe Asian foreign students' accommodation of conversation rules in non-native speaker/native speaker situation and 2) to examine factors influencing symbiotic learning of Asian foreign students' by path analysis. The following factors were examined : length of residence, friendship with Japanese, experiences concerning the student's ethnicity, intention to interact with Japanese people, motives for Japanese language learning and beliefs about language learning strategies. 372 Asian foreign students attending universities in Japan were asked to rate these factors. By factor analysis, four conversation rules were found and three rules of them were more important in case of Japanese speaker situation. Path analysis indicated that friendship and favorable experiences contributed positively to the intention to interact with Japanese people, and this intention strengthened the beliefs about nonverbal learning. And then this belief facilitated the symbiotic learning of three conversation rules. The other rule which was restrained in Japanese speaker situation was directly effected by friendship and experiences. These results suggested the importance of preparation to receive foreign people and education for Japanese people side.
