Abstract

In this article, we empirically test the hypothesis that students face social costs if their educational aspirations exceed the aspirations of their friends (cf. Boudon 1974). This involves the investigation of systematic differences in the costs that arise for students with and without a migration background. We use data from the NEPS stating cohort 4 (9th-graders). The results from OLS-estimations suggest that students whose aspirations are higher than their friends’ aspirations face social costs in the form of a lower satisfaction with friends and an increased problem behavior. This association is stable when controlling for sex, school type, subjective probability of success and social status. Migrant students face higher costs that students without a migration background. © 2019, The Editors of the Journal.
