Abstract
The process stemming from the development of the state of the autonomies has reinforced the symbolic work of restitution or substitution of «places of memory» with the explicit objective of reconstructing social, community and national identities. This process has involved a mechanism of nostalgia and mythology, of self-interested silences and forgetfulness as well as pluralism and hierarchy in the «institutionalization» of collective memories. In the case of Catalonia, public spaces reveal the prevalence of nationalist, conservative or Catholic memory over the remembrance of the history and memory of anti-Francoism and exile. © 2018 Asociacion Historiadores del Presente.
