Abstract
The article focuses on the Russian imperial policies towards the Cossack communities of the Pontic Steppe region at the turn of the eighteenthnineteenth centuries and the destiny of the former Zaporozhian (Lower Dnieper) Cossacks after the dissolution of their stronghold in 1775. The emphasis is on the shifting loyalties of frontier communities, challenges to imperial policies in borderland region and the required flexibility of the imperial rule. © 2018, Diavlos Publications.
