Abstract

This article describes the development of a scenario-based strategy questionnaire for assessing metacognitive strategy knowledge (ScenEx: Scenario-Based Executive Metacognition in Studying in a Foreign Language). This instrument is currently used in the longitudinal research project SpraStu (Language and academic success of international students at German universities). A brief methodological overview of strategy assessment techniques is followed by a detailed description of the ScenEx rationale, contents, and psychometric quality. ScenEx assesses knowledge of strategy adequacy in contextualized and empirically validated study-related situations (scenarios) with reference to an expert-based qualitative standard. The piloting revealed good psychometric qualities of the instrument. First external validation resulted in robust correlations with measures of language competence, but not with other measures of self-regulation, pointing at the language-specificity of ScenEx. Potential uses of the questionnaire are discussed, as are constraints and limitations. © 2019 Schneider Verlag Hohengehren GmbH.All Rights Reserved.
