Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the personal identity of Ecuadorian immigrant represented in short stories published between 1981 and 2014. Based on some theoretical perspectives located in the field of sciences social and humanities (philosophy, psychology, sociology), which address the issue of personal identity, it is concluded that there is a complex but very fruitful representation of this kind of identity in the literary works of short fiction selected as the object of study. For the presentation of analytical essays its contents is organized and distributed in five sections, on which it is based, problematizes, exemplifies and analyzes the literary recreation of the following aspects: the personal identity of Ecuadorian immigrants, which is ranging from ambivalence, the permanent search and transience in romantic relationships established in countries of destination; crisis of personal identity of emigrants; multiple identities; changes, physical and mental order, which generates the emigration process in its protagonists; and the metamorphosis of Ecuadorian immigrants, who show radical changes in the body and the psyche, all of these caused by the leaving of the country of origin. © 2019 Masaryk University.
