Abstract
The present study puts forth a discussion on the concept of modernity, in the way it is constructed in Matei Calinescu’s works. Along with his exile in America in the 70s, there is a change that takes place, as far as Matei Calinescu’s writing and theory is concerned. Thus, the way the theory of modernity is shaped on this path of transition from a Romanian communist context towards an American one is the question the present proposal starts from. Starting with Teodora Dumitru’s book The Modernity Network. Paul de Man – Matei Calinescu – Antoine Compagnon [Rețeaua modernităților: Paul de Man – Matei Călinescu – Antoine Compagnon]–, I decided to question the way Matei Calinescu’s concept of modernity is constructed, on one side, in the context of his exile, and on the other, in that of a distinction between national and global. © 2019, Biblioteca Astra Sibiu.
