Abstract

In interviews conducted for the MATC survey, professionals have mentioned the fear of Maghrebi patients not to be treated in care homes with the same consideration as people of European origin. Their entourage thinks that health professionals are not aware of the respect of the body and funeral rites in the Islamic culture. During hospitalization, dietary recommendations are frequently the only requirement considered. The caregivers acknowledge their ignorance of the needs of Muslims, especially at the end of life. Consequently, the entire organization of the end of life care depends on the family. Regarding the wills for burial, the French regulation of cemeteries no longer allows the confessional groupings and burials compliant to Islam are sometimes denied. So a compassionate compromise must be found. © 2016, Yozmot Heiliger Ltd. All rights reserved.
