Abstract
The acute and emergency care of refugees is a challenge in the context of our health system on the one hand and the cultural and religious life story of refugees on the other. The exclusive treatment in acute cases and in pain is not sufficient here. The first medical contact in the initial refugee camps mostly means the first contact to European medical care systems at all. Using the example of three refugee camps of the sate of Hessen the treatment of acute emergencies as well as diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases are described. These activities make special demands on the medical staff and require special structures. Most problems of misunderstanding arise from ignorance of the German health system or are due to the difficult communications. Life-threatening emergencies are only rarely found. A main task is the detection of infectious diseases and the start of preventive measures. © 2016 Dustri-Verlag Dr. Karl Feistle.
