Abstract
Background: Throughout Germany a variety of different concepts are currently being discussed all aiming at an improvement of psychosocial health care for the more than one million refugees. Beside specialized interventions provided by psychotherapists or psychiatrists, non-expert, low threshold interventions of low intensity are often neglected, but of utmost importance since they enable those patients with a different cultural background an uncomplicated and faster access to the German health system and thereby accelerate integration processes. Aim: Against this background, we describe within this review article typical stressors refugees experience throughout the whole migration process as well as regular barriers towards the German health care system. Moreover, we suggest principles refugee mental health concepts should consider and finally, discuss potential societal implications of mental health in refugees.
