Abstract
Giving birth in a foreign land can be particularly difficult. The language barrier, medical techniques sometimes opposed to traditional customs, different representations of illness and solitude represent some of the vulnerability factors in young immigrant mothers. This article presents the clinical situation of a dyad under observation in the maternity ward by the pedopsychiatry team. Emphasis is put on the difficult encounter between perinatal psychiatry and culturally encoded postpartum depression. A clinical and therapeutic orientation is discussed. Acquiring more perspective while sharing the experience can lead to a rich clinical and human encounter at the same time. © 2015 Elsevier Masson SAS.
