Abstract

One approach to prevent the spread of multi drug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms in health facilities is to screen populations at risk. The Robert Koch Institute repeatedly received requests for advice concerning the screening of asylum seekers for such microorganisms. This statement describes the advantages and disadvantages of screening asylum seekers for M DR microorganisms in hospitals and in refugee reception facilities, based on the available literature and the recommendations of the Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO). It provides guidance for screening asylum seekers in hospitals but recommends against their screening in refugee reception facilities.
