Abstract

This article focuses on the problematic subject of how to integrate refugee and migrant children who lack German language skills into the German school system. I centre on the integration of children into the school routine in Berlin and try to demonstrate what is, empirically, the most efficient model of integration. I describe in detail the model of the Willkommensklasse - its meaning, organization, and activity - as well as the two different concepts of Willkommensklasse that are formed in practice in the schools of Berlin. A Willkommensklasse is a class for children who do not have any German language skills, and it seeks to provide instruction in German that will move them to a level that will allow the children to take part in regular classes.
