Abstract

When a person migrates from rural to urban he has to adjust himself to urban culture, values and attitudes of it. But individuals find it difficult to adapt themselves to the urban culture and they are in turn affected by acculturative stress. In this study students who come from rural areas of Tamil Nadu to Chennai a cosmopolitan urban area are studied. The influence of acculturative stress on their academic performance is tested. This study also attempts to analyse the influence of demographic variables on acculturative stress and academic performance of students. A series of linear regressions were conducted on the data. The results denote that age of the students; stream of study and the migration type have a significant relationship with the acculturative stress. Students were observed to have higher academic performance (mean = 73.57) and lower acculturative stress (mean = 66.69). Practical implications to various stake holders are discussed. © 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
