Abstract

Institutional Power PlaySexual and Reproductive Health of Migrant Women: The article addresses the experiences of migrant women with violence in the context of the healthcare system, specifically in the field of sexual and reproductive health. It focuses primarily on institutional violence in the form of discriminatory practices, restrictions on access to (healthcare) rights, violation of rights, abuse of power from the part of medical staff etc. The results of the qualitative study carried out among medical staff and migrant women in three coastal municipalities expose the existence of discrimination, the non-acceptance of different cultural practices and restrictions in access to adequate medical treatment. In this regard, the main issues are communication challenges, which arise from the lack of knowledge of the Slovene language and (consequently), a lack of appropriate information and limited access to (appropriate) health services. Additional problem is also a lack of intercultural competencies of healthcare professionals as well as a lack of systemic solutions in the field of sexual and reproductive health, which would address migrant women. © 2018, © 2018 EURICOM.
