Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold: to discover how Korean immigrant women perceived their health and to identify associations between social indicators and the health of Korean immigrant women. Participants in the study comprised a nonprobability sample of 137 Korean immigrant women living in the United States who submitted questionnaires about their health to the researcher by U.S. mail in 2004. Approximately 49% of the participants perceived their health as fair or poor. After age, income, education, marital status, and occupational status were controlled, the significant predictors of self-assessed health were involvement in exercise and length of residency in the United States. In future studies, the relationships between perception of health related to acculturation and self-rating health should be investigated.
