The exploitation of acculturating immigrant populations (Article)

Miller L.A.*
  • a Civil Society, Saint Paul, United States

Abstract

This analysis is based upon the experiences of Civil Society, a provider of legal and support services to immigrants who are victims of crime, regulatory violations and unscrupulous business practices in St. Paul, Minnesota since 1996. The types of victimizations covered range from sexual harassment to defrauding immigrants of tax credits to consumer frauds to labor law violations to domestic abuse and mail order brides. Contrary to what advocates of policies promoting acculturation and integration of immigrants might expect, the analysis finds that the victimization of immigrants increases as they seek to acculturate into society. © 2007, A B Academic Publishers - Printed in Great Britain.
