Abstract

One million German citizens are under legal guardianship. Since almost one fifth of the German population are migrants or first generation offspring of migrants the task of legal guardianship for migrants attracts increasing interest. The authors summarize the legal provisions and review data from an epidemiological survey from 2000/2001. They provide an insight into their own practical experience and formulate suggestions for legislative reform and advice for guardians. Areas of research are identified. Guidelines for a sensible guardianship practice with migrants are discussed.
