Abstract

Being an international student entails studying within a cultural environment that is unfamiliar. There is a need to study this experience because of its peculiarity, the increase in the international student population, and the gap in literature about African students in the health sciences. Thus, the study seeks to understand the lived experience of African nursing students in the US and how the students interpreted that experience. The methodology used is qualitative and the design is phenomenology. The target population is African nursing students in Maryland and the sample consists of eleven purposely selected African nursing students. Data collection is done through interviews. Data are analyzed through thematic analysis. Suggestions are made for students, educators, and administrators based on the study outcomes. © Common Ground Research Networks.
