Abstract

Background: Today there are approximately 40 million refugees or displaced people in the world. These people leave homes due to urgent cases such as war, civil conflict, flood, earthquake, famine, etc., and usually stay in refugee camps. It is stated that these groups suffer serious problems even in meeting their basic needs. They usually live in substandard conditions and their chances to reach many services are restricted. In this case, it seems that their needs of reproductive health may be neglected as well. The fact that they are open to sexual abuse and increasingly involve in sex for food/service brings about sexually transmitted ilnesses and risk of HIV/AIDS infection. Because refugee movements will continue and refugees interact with the host society, the issue of HIV/AIDS stands as a problem to be solved with a multiple approach in the refugee settlements. Material/Methods: The method of literature survey was used in this study. The relationship between refugees and HIV/AIDS was examined, and an approach to solve the problem best was sought having put forth the ways of HIV/AIDS transmission and the general picture of this illness. Results: Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS cases increase in the refugee settlements day by day. Because of this, the issue of HIV/ AIDS needs to be approached from the viewpoint of both their country of origin and the the host countries, and with a transnational perspective, since the refugee migration is an international one. Conclusions: Individual, grup and community-based services should be provided through a holistic understanding in approaching the refugees who live with HIV/AIDS in the refugee settlements. As dealing with the issue of HIV/AIDS in the refugee settlements, a service and policy network needs to be established comprising all international, national and regional levels within the framework of the international structure and the universal human rights, and this system to be designed in a way to make it available easily for all refugees.
