Abstract
Inmigration is a complex phenomenon with implications in health systems. In Spain, in the last years, there has been an important increase in the number of inmigrants. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of inmigrants that were admitted to an acute psychiatric ward in a two-year period. There were 44 admissions which corresponded to 33 patients (5,38% of total admissions). Almost half of the patients were illegal residents in Spain and 42,4% were considered as having social problems. One third of the patients came from Morocco, with a differentiated profile respect to other countries of origin: with more psychotic episodes, frequently of toxic origin and a worse knowledge of spanish. One third of patients were alcohol abusers. Copyright © 2006 Aran Ediciones, S. L.
