Abstract
Aims: Russian emigrants are underrepresented in addiction services in Germany, yet the proportion of them who die of drug-related causes has risen dramatically without an explanation. Methods: Ten experts from addiction services were interviewed in order to gather information on the situation of Russian drug-dependent emigrants and obtain recommendations for improving addiction services for them. Results: The drug-use patterns that were described confirmed impressions that excessive drug use is excessive. The early onset of intravenous use is alarming. Furthermore, shared use of needles and other paraphernalia increases the risk of spreading infectious diseases. Conclusion: From the point of view of experts, several measures should be undertaken to improve the information base of the users, increase cultural sensitivity in addiction services and focus on prevention through improved integration of emigrants.
