Abstract

As the immigrant population ages, the number of retirees is increasing. How do immigrants spend and perceive retirement? How does retirement fit into the integration process? This paper attempts to answer those questions by studying the lifestyles and forms of integration of retired immigrants and their dual relationship with their country of origin and France. This analysis is based on the results of a recent survey on immigrants' transition to retirement (Passage à la retraite des immigrés) -the first of its kindconducted by Cnav, jointly with Insee, on a sample of 6,211 immigrants aged between 45 and 70. It shows that, far from being perceived as "illegitimate", staying in France during retirement reflects and facilitates integration. Perceptions of retirement are largely conditioned on health and income, which applies to all retirees, whether immigrants or not. For many immigrants from Europe and North and sub-Saharan Africa, life in France is combined with ongoing strong ties to the country of origin. Retirees nevertheless feel a stronger sense of belonging to France than people of working age. © La Documentation française. Tous droits réservés pour tous pays.
