Abstract
A major hurdle in the school careers of students with migration background lies in the acquisition of German language skills. In Germany, however, hardly any findings are available concerning the efficiency of measures taken in order to promote German as a second language. Referring to literature on summer learning, a summer program for the promotion of German language skills among elementary school children was developed and evaluated using an experimental design with random assignment to treatment groups. On the basis of a comprehensive description of the conception and implementation of the design, the authors illustrate how the demand for more strictly controlled studies in education may be met.
