Abstract

Cross border worker migration in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) does not differ substantially from movement patterns that take place daily throughout other parts of East Asia as well as the broader global economy. The rights-based approach is outlined in a 2010 ILO study that makes two significant points. First, cross border work-based migration is an important contributor to creating and sustaining economic growth and material prosperity in both migration destination and origin countries. Throughout the GMS, conforming to ILO ideals requires protecting and benefiting more than 200,000 migrants who move throughout the four- country region on a daily basis. Doing so makes it possible for increased economic benefits to accrue to migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar as well as employers who hire them in Thailand. When the GMS is extended to include Vietnam and Yunan Province of the People's Republic of China (PRC) the entire territory becomes the Greater Mekong Region (GMR).
