Abstract
Slovenia does not have a strategy for mother tongue tuition of immigrant pupils. Schools offering these types of lessons to immigrant pupils therefore have to fend for themselves. Our main argument is that in spite of the theoretical support given in official statements, only a few Slovene schools offer mother tongue tuition to immigrant pupils. A ccordingly, our findings highlight serious issues since mother tongue tuition can enrich schools from a cultural as well as educational perspective. The paper discusses these findings in the light of policies and practices of mother tongue tuition in Slovenia and other EU countries. Against this background, two main policy approaches in the provision of mother tongue tuition are identified: Bilateral agreements and the European Community Council Directive 77/486/EECof25July 1977 on the education of children of migrant workers.
