Abstract
This text contains some of the results of ethnographic research on prostitution, which for several years, the author has been investigating in the province of Jaén (Andalusia, Spain). It provides, first, an overview of the sex market in the province. Then, in relation to women, mostly immigrants, working as prostitutes in nightclubs of Jaen, some of their general characteristics are illustrated by six life stories of migratory processes and pathways including the sex that followed. The main problems they face are identified, including the trafficking for sexual exploitation. In relation to this problem, the author challenges the claim asserted dogmatically and sustained by the abolitionist movement that ninety-percent of women engaging in prostitution in Spain were forced into prostitution and are in a situation of sexual slavery.
