Abstract

Objective: To study the awareness of existence of Chagas disease among immigrants from endemic countries. Setting: Urban Health Centre. Subjects: Patients from Continental Central and South America older than 14 years old visited in a heath centre for any reason and who agreed to take part in our study. Methods: Observational, transversal study. Endpoints: three questions were asked: 1.Do you know Chagas disease? Yes/No, 2.Do you know anybody with Chagas disease? Yes/No, 3.Do you think that Chagas Disease is a heath problem in your country of origin? Yes/No/Don't know. Results: 246 patients were included. No statistical differences were seen in relation with gender or the age of the population. The most frequent countries of origin were: Peru 70 patients (28,7%), Ecuador 44 patients (17,9%), Colombia 37 patients (15%), Bolivia 31 patients (12%), Argentina 18 patients (7,3%) and Brazil 11 patients (4,5%). Patients from Bolivia, Argentina and Bazil showed a significant better awareness and knew more people affected than those from Peru, Equator and Colombia. Patients from Bolivia also identified Chagas Disease as a health problem in their county of origin. Conclusion: Patients from Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil showed a better awareness of existence of Chagas disease.
