Abstract
Migration today is characterized by transnationalism and complex mobility which challenge classical migration theories. In the author's analysis of data from interviews with 30 Mainland professional immigrants in Hong Kong, it was discovered that a trans-territorial identity among them. This flexibility of recognition enhances their livelihood strategies and those of adaptation. This newly formed identity, a product of the hypermobility of contemporary population movements, suggests that the boundaries of sovereign social entities will become blurred and fade. There is, however, a dark side to it: mobile immigrants typically experience alienation, anomie and self-estrangement.
