Abstract
The survey carried out with sixty people of sub-Saharan descent examines the old-age representations of parents born and brought up in Africa and of their children, born and brought up in France. The former feel that growing old in Africa is positive because it holds a privileged status. Old age in France on the other hand is perceived as a world of solitude and inconsideration. Their children who have an idealistic view of old age in Africa can neither imagine their parents going home to their country nor putting them into an institution. They can already envisage the difficulties of renewed cohabitation. The ethics of duty uniting the two generations remain however; solidarity with the elders' country on the one hand and the children's gratitude to their parents on the other. © Fond.
