Abstract

Social epidemiology aims to investigate whether, and if so to what degree, socially disadvantaged population groups are also disadvantaged with regard to their health. Social disadvantage is measured in terms of vertical inequalities such as socioeconomic status, as well as of horizontal inequalities such as gender and migrant status. Social disadvantage is presumed to affect health through selection effects, material and structural factors and through particular behavioral factors. Besides social determinants, social epidemiology increasingly focuses on salutogenetic factors and a life course perspective.
